The world is forgetting the horrors of October 7, and sympathy for Israel is diminishing: the murderous terrorist attack by Hamas brought with it an unprecedented wave of support and sympathy from the countries of the world. The leaders of the most important countries in the world competed in expressions of identification with and sympathy for Israel, and even visited here in droves, shocked by the horrific massacres committed by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens.
The person who headed the Friends of Israel is the President of the United States, Joe Biden, who came to Israel for an important visit ten days after the massacre, was behind generous and quick arms shipments to Israel and sent aircraft carriers to the area to prevent an escalation on the northern front. The public sympathy of the Western public opinion reached its peak, and gave the Western countries the legitimacy to unreservedly support an Israeli military strike against Hamas.
Five months have passed since then, and it seems that Israel is gradually losing these assets and is currently facing a veritable political tsunami, when the patience of the best of our friendships – the USA and the UK – is also running out. Tonight, perhaps in the most vehement statement against Netanyahu since the beginning of the war, Biden has already said that in the context of the number of Gazan victims, “Netanyahu is more harmful to Israel than helpful.”
Meanwhile, Israel still enjoys relatively strong support in public opinion polls in the US and the West, but the support is decreasing and is mainly focused on conservative audiences, men and adults. The problem is that the young people of the world are against us en masse.
A senior Israeli ambassador to one of the European countries says that there is an achievement here that the war has been going on for five months and the US is still stalling a resolution calling for a ceasefire. “The problem is that the timeline is too long. As the hands of time move forward, the events of October 7 are forgotten,” he says.
A senior European ambassador who defines himself as a “friend of Israel” is very concerned about Israel’s position in European public opinion. He says that Israel’s situation on the continent has never been so bad. “You are left alone. There are maybe one or two countries, Hungary and the Czech Republic, that still support you. But with the exception of them, you are in glorious solitude,” he says.
According to him, “If you don’t convince at least one or two more countries to support you, you will soon face a very difficult situation. Your situation is very bad among the elites and especially on the campuses. People have forgotten about October 7 and are convinced that you are committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. People are tired of the war in Gaza And they want to see the end of it.”
